She is said to have been born of Sea Foam from parts of Kronos when he was thrown into the sea, though some have said she is the daughter of Zeus and Dione. Her beauty is admired by all men.

She was forced into marrying Hephaestus the Blacksmith in order to save Hera. Because their relationship is a strained one, she known to have relationships with other men, most notably with Ares, the god of War.
